Between 29 October and 1 November 2019, the Singapore Energy Market Authority (“EMA”) held ‘Singapore International Energy Week 2019’ (“SIEW 2019”) in Singapore. Audray Souche (Partner; Managing Director) paneled a thinktank roundtable discussion on the session held on 1 November morning. The key topic of the discussion was risks, policies and investment opportunities for renewables in Southeast Asia. The panel comprised Gu-Yoon Chung (Head of Business Development Asia Pacific – Enel Green Power), Kelvin Wong (Executive Director, Project Finance – Institutional Banking Group – DBS Bank), Dr. Arunabha Ghosh (Founder; CEO – CCEW), Audray Souche (Partner; Managing Director – DFDL Thailand) and moderated by Lucila Arboleya (Economics and Financial Analyst – IEA). The discussion revolved around key drivers guiding investment decisions in renewables throughout Southeast Asia. This included outlining the associated risks and barriers, enhanced policy frameworks, well-designed financial mechanisms, and new business models (corporate PPAs) needed to address persistent risks and create investment opportunities. Key desirable near-term actions by governments, industry and the finance community were also highlighted to improve the availability of financing. The discussion ended with an engaging Q&A session with interesting and thought provoking exchanges between the panellists and guests in attendance.
