Surath Bhattacharjee is a Senior Legal Adviser at DFDL Myanmar. Before joining DFDL, he was a Senior Associate at a regional law firm (now part of Andersen Global), where he worked in Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, advising on corporate and commercial matters, foreign direct investment, and project financing.
At DFDL, Surath focuses on corporate, commercial, banking and finance, energy, infrastructure and data privacy matters. His experience includes advising on the sale of a luxury hotel in Yangon, restructuring loans for a Myanmar agricultural company, and guiding the sale of shares in a Singapore-based technology company. He also advised foreign-based shareholders in the sale of a distressed manufacturing company in Myanmar, addressing regulatory and risk mitigation concerns. Surath has advised a large technical consultant company on the potential development of an upstream oil and gas project, and a global oil and gas service provider on responses to queries pertaining to contracting principles. He routinely advises Myanmar subsidiaries of multinational companies on data protection matters.
He has extensive experience in foreign exchange matters, including navigating Myanmar’s regulatory landscape by evaluating project structures, contractual payment plans, restructuring loans, leasing movable assets for oil and gas projects, and ensuring compliance in post-acquisition fund flows.
Surath is an active speaker at webinars organized by EuroCham Myanmar and the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Myanmar), covering topics such as consumer goods, energy, and foreign exchange. He contributed to the Myanmar chapter of ‘A Guide to Impact Investing in Southeast Asia’ for Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs. Fluent in English and Hindi, he effectively serves a diverse client base.
