The Lao PDR has introduced its first Civil Code. After over 6 years of consultation and drafting the Civil Code (№ 55/NA, 6 December 2018) (“Civil Code”) was published on the Government Gazette on 11 May 2020 and will come into effect 15 days thereafter, being 26 May 2020.

The Civil Code is a comprehensive piece of legislation (630 articles) and replaces the Contract and Tort Law, Family Law, Property Law, Inheritance Law, certain Articles of the Secured Transaction Law and other laws with respect to civil matters.

We will provide further updates on the changes resulting from the enactment of the Civil Code, but if you have any specific questions in the meantime please don’t hesitate to reach out.
