DFDL Shares Insights on the Myanmar Companies Act

Senior Legal Adviser Jaime Casanova and Legal Adviser Bridget Di Certo delivered an intensive half-day training course on the Myanmar Companies Act 1914 to 117 new employees from the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (DICA) at their Yangon office on Monday as part of their onboard training program.DICA is rapidly expanding its workforce to handle the vast increase in investments into and within Myanmar.

New hires who attended the course will staff new regional DICA offices in several under-serviced locations. Therecruits will be responsible for reviewing investment proposals from foreign businesses and processing company registration applications.

Their work will require knowledge of the Companies Act and understanding of business structures in Myanmar. Director of DICA’s Investment Promotion Division Dr. Marlar Myo Nyunt expressed appreciation to DFDL for the in-depth training.

“The course was an excellent way to learn more about the Myanmar Companies Act 1914,” Dr. Marlar Myo Nyunt said. “Thank you for sharing all your expertise to our new officials. We hopefully will be able to implement it further into the field.”

The training focused on shareholder meetings, key elements of the Memorandum and Articles of Association, directors duties and filing processes from a corporate perspective.

DFDL expanded into Myanmar in 2005, first opening an office in Yangon. In July 2013, DFDL became the first international legal and tax advisory firm to open an office in Naypyidaw, allowing the firm to better serve client needs. The Myanmar team now has over 20 local lawyers and foreign legal advisors providing in-depth legal and tax advice.
